Photo by Kelly Davidson.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nNo American should need an introduction to singer, songwriter, producer and activist <strong>Harry Belafonte<\/strong>.<br \/>\nBut a good one can be found in the documentary, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/singyoursongthemovie.com\/\"><strong>Sing Your Song<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d<br \/>\nAn even better one can be found in Belafonte\u2019s autobiography (written with Michael Shnayerson), \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/My-Song-Memoir-Random-House\/dp\/0739378384\"><strong>My Song<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d\u00a0which is among the best books I know of for contextualizing 20th-century African American music and culture within social and political revolution, and which contains a riveting (and if Belafonte is to be believed, transformative) moment in which <strong>Robert F. Kennedy<\/strong> essentially gets told off (pages 267-68).<br \/>\nI bring up Belafonte because I just got an email informing me that he was recently presented with an honorary doctor of music degree at Boston\u2019s <strong>Berklee College of Music<\/strong>. According to a press release, the degree was awarded \u201cin recognition of Belafonte\u2019s inspiring\u00a0musical and humanitarian achievements, exposing America to world music and challenging and overturning racial barriers across the globe.\u201d<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blouinartinfo.com\/news\/story\/1015067\/harry-belafonte-receives-honorary-degree-from-berklee-college\"><em><strong>Read the entire article at ARTINFO. <\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No American should need an introduction to singer, songwriter, producer and activist Harry Belafonte.
