I\u2019d much rather consider who was naughty and nice, and what to give them: I\u2019m ambivalent at best about Top 10s when it comes to music. (Though I love them on ESPN.) And yet I do them when asked, usually by publishers\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blouinartinfo.com\/news\/story\/851284\/larry-blumenfeld-the-best-jazz-of-2012\">here<\/a>&#8216;s last year&#8217;s for this blog.<br \/>\nThis year I gave one to <strong>Nate Chinen<\/strong>, who writes about jazz for <strong>The New York Time<\/strong>s, and who invited me as a panelist for \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/jazzmuseuminharlem.org\/events\/the-year-in-jazz-a-critics-roundtable\/\"><strong>The Year in Jazz: A Critics Roundtable<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 7pm.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s hosted by <strong>The National Jazz Museum in Harlem<\/strong>, where I just completed hosting a four-week series on <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.artinfo.com\/blunotes\/2013\/12\/will-we-know-what-it-means-to-miss-hbo-treme\/\">HBO &#8220;Treme,<\/a>&#8221; and will be presented at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myimagestudios.com\/site\/page\/9\">MIST <\/a>Harlem.<!--more-->The event\u2019s promotion says we\u2019ll \u201ctalk about the music, the artists and the moments\u00a0that shaped jazz in 2013, touching on a host of issues and ideas in\u00a0the process \u2014 and answer a few burning questions from the audience.\u201d If that means that my Top 10 is just a jumping-off point for a deeper conversation\u2014and I think it does\u2014well, that\u2019s far more interesting than just seeing it in print later and wincing at the worthy stuff I left off.<br \/>\nMy fellow panelists are: <strong>Greg Tate<\/strong>, writer, musician, producer and a former staff writer at The Village Voice; <strong>Seth Colter Walls<\/strong>, culture critic\/reporter for Slate, and the London Review of Books; and <strong>Kevin Whitehead<\/strong>, jazz critic for NPR\u2019s Fresh Air; <strong>Chinen<\/strong> will moderate.<br \/>\nI hear the museum will hold their year-end reception after the panel, too, with live music; since my birthday is the 13th;\u00a0if you show up and stick around we can pretend they\u2019ve thrown the thing for me.<br \/>\nAbove are pictures of us five panelists; if you can&#8217;t match names to faces, come to Harlem and find out.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s that time of year when you make a list and check it twice.
